FIELD NOTES / PROCESS WRITING
This work was formed through lamination and pressure. Mokume-gane (木目金) depends on stacking dissimilar metals, bringing them to welding heat, and compressing them into a single body. I was interested in how difference could register as pattern.
Each billet was layered, fused, and consolidated through hammering. The surface was carved and ground back to expose the internal strata. What reads as ornament is the trace of compression made visible.
Every ring carries its own deformation. No pattern repeats because heat and force never distribute identically. The interior remains smooth and continuous, while the exterior holds the record of its making.
